In this article, we will explore the risk posed by the temperature generated by the equipment to prevent it from becoming a source of ignition. <\/p><p>There are two distinct parameters for assessing the temperature of instruments, depending on whether they are devices for gases, in which case we refer to <strong>temperature class<\/strong>, or dust, in which case we refer to <strong>maximum surface temperature.<\/strong><\/p><h2>Temperature class<\/h2><p>For atmospheres containing gases and vapours, equipment classification is based on a series of temperature classes (from T1 to T6), which identify the maximum permissible surface temperature.<\/p><table><tbody><tr><td width=\"285\"><p><strong>Temperature class<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p><strong>Maximum surface temperature (\u00b0C)<\/strong><\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T1<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>450<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T2<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>300<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T3<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>200<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T4<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>135<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T5<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>100<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"285\"><p>T6<\/p><\/td><td width=\"293\"><p>85<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><p>Each flammable substance has its own minimum ignition temperature: to be safe, the equipment must have a surface temperature below that value. Below is a table containing some examples of temperature class and permitted product combinations: <\/p><table style=\"height: 464px;\" width=\"597\"><tbody><tr><td width=\"161\"><p><strong>Temperature class<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p><strong>Max surface temperature (\u00b0C)<\/strong><\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p><strong>Examples of gases<\/strong><\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T1<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>450<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Hydrogen (\u2248 500 \u00b0C)<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T2<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>300<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Acetylene (\u2248 305 \u00b0C)<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T3<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>200<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Pentane (\u2248 240 \u00b0C)<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T4<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>135<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Ethyl ether (\u2248 180 \u00b0C)<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T5<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>100<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Highly flammable solvents<\/p><\/td><\/tr><tr><td width=\"161\"><p>T6<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>85<\/p><\/td><td width=\"208\"><p>Carbon disulphide (\u2248 90 \u00b0C)<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><h2>Maximum surface temperature<\/h2><p>For atmospheres with dust, two distinct scenarios must be distinguished (as reported in technical standard EN\/IEC 60079-31:2014):<\/p><ul><li>Ignition of dust clouds: in this case, the maximum surface temperature of a piece of equipment must not exceed two thirds of the minimum ignition temperature of the combustible dust cloud. (T<sub>cl<\/sub> \u2013 cloud temperature) T<sub>surface<\/sub> &lt; 2\/3 * T<sub>cl<\/sub><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ignition of dust layers: if there is a layer of dust thicker than 5 mm, the surface temperature of the equipment must be at least (75K = 75\u00b0C) lower than the minimum ignition temperature of the layer. (T<sub>5mm<\/sub> \u2013 ignition temperature for a 5 mm layer) T<sub>surface<\/sub> &lt; T<sub>5mm<\/sub> \u2013 75 \u00b0C<\/li><\/ul><p>Once these two values have been calculated, the most cautious solution is to take the lower of the two values as a reference and choose equipment with a maximum surface temperature lower than this value. Below is a practical example involving sugar dust: <\/p><p>T<sub>cl<\/sub> = 350 \u00b0C \u00e0 T<sub>cl, max<\/sub> = 2\/3 * T<sub>cl<\/sub> = 2\/3 * 350 \u00b0C = 233,3 \u00b0C<\/p><p>T<sub>5mm<\/sub> = 490 \u00b0C \u00e0 T<sub>5mm, max<\/sub> = T<sub>5mm<\/sub> \u2013 75\u00b0C = 490 \u2013 75 = 415 \u00b0C<\/p><p>The minimum temperature between T<sub>cl, max<\/sub> e T<sub>5mm, max<\/sub> is 233,3 \u00b0C, therefore equipment with a maximum surface temperature lower than this value must be selected.<\/p><h2>Practical example of ATEX marking<\/h2><p>The parameters described above are indicated in the ATEX marking on the device.
